Inishmaan, a small Irish village on the coast. That’s were Cripple Billy lives with his aunties, in their little shop. Everyday Johnnypateenmike passes by with everyday news from the village. Except today, the news is not so ‘everyday-like’! The yanks are coming to make a moving picture film on one of the islands nearby.

All the youngsters on Inishmaan start dreaming about a big Hollywood career, a ticket to get away from their dull and poor lives. And so does Billy. But Billy is born a cripple, and what American would make a film about a cripple?! Billy grabs his chance though, leaving two worried aunties and a jealous village behind. Will he ever return?

“The Cripple” is a beautiful and funny but grim piece about the dreams of people who are stuck in their ‘simple life’. They are people who use aggression naturally, who are not really capable of considering other people’s feelings and who are stuck in their old habits. Nevertheless, they are all searching for love and affection.
